Elkhart High School
The city of Elkhart, Indiana decided to unify their two high schools. After a long process, Elkhart Central High School and Elkhart Memorial High School will now become Elkhart High School. With this unification came the birth of a new mascot. After suggestions from the community, the school board decided on the Lions.

What’s in a Mascot?
We wanted the community to be heard throughout the process, so we gathered information to better identify what Elkhart wanted and needed. With the community assessment in mind, we designed our Lion to stand proud, looking forward to the future, while conscious of the history we are leaving behind.
According to research, stakeholders at Elkhart High School and in the Elkhart community see lions as brave and proud. An Elkhart Lion is at the head of the pack. Noble. Brave. Proud. Strong.
Uniquely Different
The challenge of trying to create something new and fresh while also bringing in the rich history that each of the two schools has was the main challenge. We took three separate approaches that yielded three separate concepts and created a visual identity system that would eventually be used to create a costumed mascot.
Building The Crest
The official crest was created for use on school documents or other formal applications where appropriate. There are several color variations and it can accommodate a wide variety of uses. This crest combines everything that we love about the new brand while also incorporating pieces from each school’s previous brand.
A Place to Be Heard
Vala had a vision of inviting students and members of the
community to participate in building out the Elkhart Lions brand.
Students were able to download the official Lions assets on a custom landing page and submit designs for a chance to bring their work to life.
